CSU University Center Bites the Dust

Although interior and site demolition work has been underway for Cleveland State University's new student center, the former Brutalist student center's exterior started to come down earlier this morning.

The new student center by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects anticipates a Spring 2010 opening.

The Baroque had its Rococo and now the modern has its post-modern, or is that post-mortem?

This Gwathmey makes me feel like I just et too much fatty yellow cake with way too much Crisco frosting. I'd take the delicate (not brutal, will you guys knock it off with the brutal moniker already!) "genoise with a light syrup" of the Hisaka over this wannabe overstuffed sofa any day.

I mean, seriously, this thing looks like what I expect to find at Norka Futon, or from the top, like some newfangled controller for a video game. It's confused - its identity is wandering all over the place trying to be all things to all onlookers.

So what, President Schwartz - you just wasted plenty of concrete and steel and a beautiful design to get another link in the "we don't have to go outside" fortress of CSU. I don't care how many widgets it has or how many confused architectural elements are there to boggle the mind, (you architects can name-call til the cows come home), but CSU just wasted a perfectly good and serviceable building for somebody's ego. It will be reflected in the tuition payments of course.

I hope I warm to the new reality that will rise on Euclid Avenue, but so far I’m not convinced that there is anything resembling a context in this new spaceship. Oh, and excuuuuuse me, if I am an uneducated non-architect who should know better than to speak out against such atrocities as the PBL and a new shiny toy by “Gwathmey”, but IMHO, they’re overrated. Loading dock on Ford… sheesh, Frank, get a grip!

OK it’s a style thing – you won’t find anything ruffled in my closet either.

RIP University Center...
